Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher’s bold new production probes the psychological underpinnings of Verdi’s dynamic setting of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. At the helm of this performance is riveting conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who brings out all the cascading emotions in Verdi’s turbulent score. Aleksandrs Antonenko is the Moor Otello, the triumphant general of the Venetian army who is ultimately brought down by the sly insinuations of his friend Iago (Željko Lučić). Sonya Yoncheva continues to win fans as Desdemona, Otello’s faithful and long-suffering wife. With Günther Groissböck as Lodovico and Dimitri Pittas as Cassio. Watch online here.

Theatre HD Live in Cinema: The Exterminating Angel
The Metropolitan Opera 2017, 156 min (with one intermission). Directed by Tom Cairnes. Starring: Audrey Luna, Amanda Echalaz, Sally Matthews. In English. The Metropolitan Opera presents the American premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel, inspired by the classic Luis Buñuel film of the same name. Hailed by the New York Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as «inventive and audacious … a major event», The Exterminating Angel is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape. Tom Cairns, who wrote the libretto, directs the new production, and Adès conducts his own adventurous new opera. The cast includes Audrey Luna, Iestyn Davies, Joseph Kaiser, and others. Theatre HD Live in Cinema: The Winter's Tale
Shakespeare's Globe 2018, 177 min (with one intermission). Directed by Blanche McIntyre. Starring: Will Keen, Oliver Ryan, Luke MacGregor. In English. In a fit of groundless jealousy, Leontes wrecks his marriage, defies the gods, destroys his family and ruins himself. As the years roll around, a new generation flee their own country and take refuge in Sicilia. Unknowingly they bring with them the key to the past, present and future… A ‘winter’s tale’ is a fantasy, and The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable. The play’s uncontrollable emotions – rage, love, grief and forgiveness – range across gender, country, class and age. Its universe is full of monsters, gods and natural disasters, and its colossal sweep takes us from stifling courts to unbuttoned festivals. Blanche McIntyre has recently worked at the Donmar Warehouse, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Chichester Festival Theatre. She directed The Comedy of Errors and As You Like It at the Globe in 2014 and 2015. Watch online here.
