The Tsar Cannon is one of the brilliants in Kremlin’s collection of weapons. The court caster Andrey Chokhov founded it in 1586 by order of tsar Fedor Ioannovich. This 40-ton cannon is considered to be the biggest in the World: its caliber equals 890 mm, the length of the barrel – 5.34 metres (17,6 feet). However, this military masterpiece has never made a single shot. Some historical and technical evidence allow historians to suppose that the cannon was designed to shoot with the grapeshot. Soon after the cast the Tsar Cannon was placed on the Red Square near the Spasskie Gates (as it’s supposed, to protect them). In 1706 it was moved to the Arsenal, and only after 1960 it was taken to its modern place. The modern gun carriage and the decorative hollow cannon balls were cast in 1835 at the Berd’s steel foundry in St.- Petersburg.
