Pushkin Museum was officially established in 1961 although museum’s collections were mainly formed already in 1937 when a grandiose exhibition dedicated to 100 years since Pushkin’s death took place. Museum’s second “birth” occured in 1999 when Russia celebrated Pushkin’s 200th anniversary. Former noble family residence which is an excellent sample of the Empire Style in the 19th century Moscow architecture was completely renovated and museum’s unique collections were fortunately saved.

The museum is famous for the atmosphere of the 19th century carefully created by the custodians, the atmosphere that surrounded and inspired the great poet. Walking from one room to another we are following Pushkin’s steps: each room represents a different period of his life (childhood, school years in the legendary Tsarskoe selo lyceum, exiles, last years of poet’s life). Several rooms are devoted to his masterpieces in literature: "Evgeny Onegin", "The Bronze Horseman", "Captain’s Daughter". There is an excellent display of Pushkin’s personal belongings, letters and drawings, rare editions of his literary heritage and books from poet’s library (which consisted of more than 15 000 books in 14 languages), portraits by famous Russian artists, marvelous miniature paintings, engravings and old Moscow views in watercolour. The atmosphere is also created by all those unique samples of 18th and 19th century furniture, ceramics and porcelain.
