Everything in the area of Poklonnaya Gora is imbued with the spirit of war glory, triumph and patriotism. The reason is in the deep history of the place. Once it was a hill where all important guests of the capital were met with a bow ("poklon" means a bow). In 1812 Napoleon Bonaparte stood here waiting for the keys of Kremlin.

[edit] Museum-Panorama “Borodino Battle”

In 1962 a panorama-museum of the legendary Borodino Battle (Kutuzovsky prospekt, 38) opened here for the edification of unexpected visitors to the capital. Next to the museum there was once so called “Kutuzovskaya izba” where on September 1, 1812 the great Commander Mikhail Kutuzov held a meeting where the historical decision to leave Moscow was reached.

[edit] Triumph Gates

The only preserved Triumph Gates were moved here from Tverskaya zastava. They were designed by Osip Bove and replaced wooden gates which had been erected in 1814 for the ceremonial reception of the victorious Russian army. The gates are embellished with statues of Russian soldiers, allegorical figures of Victory and Glory, high reliefs “Expulsion of French intruders” and “Liberation of Moscow”.

[edit] Victory Park

In 1995 the Victory Park was founded here; this occasion was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. It includes the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War, an art gallery, the Cathedral of the Great Martyr Georg, a mosque and a synagogue erected in memory of those Muslims and Jews who have perished in the horror of the war. Moscow famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli has placed here one of his most monumental masterpieces: the statue of St.Georg spearing the dragon.

[edit] Chain of Fountains

Another thing that attracts visitors is the chain of fountains illuminated in bloody red in the evening; this symbolizes the floods of blood shed by Soviet soldiers.
