[edit] Borodino Battle
The Patriotic War of 1812, or the Russian Campaign of Napoleon as it is called in the West, occupies one of the most remarkable places in the Russian history, which was very reach in events. The Patriotic War of 1812 has become the beginning of the crisis of Napoleon's Empire; Russia has become the place of the destruction of the Great Army. Long and heavy retreat of the Russian armies in land, bitterness of defeats in the first months of the campaign, the tragedy of the surrender of Moscow to the enemy, and finally the triumph and joy after enemy's proscription from the boarders of Motherland – these were the steps which led Russian army and all Russian people to the Victory.
[edit] Exposition
The main museum’s exhibit is the huge panorama by F. Rubo, depicting the scenes of Borodino battle. It is 15 m (50 ft) high and 115 m (383 ft) long canvas, located in a round hall with a viewing platform, which is “the centre of the battle”. Special lighting intensifies an illusion of a real space and a presence effect; some objects of the canvas are combined with the artificial terrain. Since 1995 the survey of the panorama is accompanied by sound effects. On the canvas you will find the portraits of some historical persons such as Kutuzov, Napoleon, Bagration, and Murat. A Triumphal Arch at the Victory Square connects the museum with Poklonnaya Gora; so, all these monuments together make up a united memorial complex.
