Moscow Circuses & Zoo Guide [1]
[edit] Description
Moscow Zoo, the biggest and the oldest zoo in Russia, was founded in 1864 by the leading zoologists of those times. Nowadays the collection counts more than 6000 specimens of 1001 animal species. The territory of the Zoo consists of two parts (the Old and New ones), connected together by the foot-bridge across the Bolshaya Gruzinskaya, and totally occupies the vast territory of about 19 hectares. It gives shelter for more than 100 rare species of animals, which are on the brink of extinction: orangutans and gorillas, spectacled bear and the giant tortoise from Seychelles.
This is the best place to spend a family weekend: the children and, surprisingly, their parents are always happy to see ceremonious ducks, geese and swans, pensive giraffes, roaring tigers and playful monkeys. But please be careful: some of the animals can bite you if you approach the cage too close. For example, cassowarys peck rather painfully.
In recent years the Zoo was completely reconstructed, new pavilions and exhibitions were added. Among the special permanent exhibitions are “Exotarium” – unique pavilion with sea aquariums, “The Birds’ House”, “The Night World” and others.
