[edit] Description

Fedor Dostoevsky, a great Russian writer of the 19th century (author of the celebrated novels “Crime and Punishment”, “The Karamazov Brothers” and a widely known story “Death of Ivan Ilyich”) was born in this house in 1821 and spent here his first 16 years. The house is a part of the architectural ensemble of the Mariinskaya Hospital, built in early 19th century by famous Russian architect Domenico Gilardi. It was granted to Dostoevsky's father who worked in the Hospital as a physician. Here you can feel the atmosphere of the Dostoevsky’s youth when his creative personality was formed. The most fascinating part of the interior is the drawing-room with cobalt walls and mahogany furniture.
