Guide to Moscow Streets

Gogolevsky Bulvarwas named after the famous Russian writer Nikolay Gogol. The first statue to Gogol appeared in 1909 due to Gogol’s 100th anniversary. Sculptor Nikolay Andreev managed to capture writer’s tragedy: sitting in a chair, sad and melancholic Gogol seemed to experience a serious mental disorder. But sick Gogol didn’t fit well into the ‘bright communistic reality’ so it was replaced with another Gogol, standing, wise and full of brilliant ideas. Today you can find old Gogol modestly hiding in a courtyard at Nikitsky bvd. No.7, where he spent the last years of his life.

At the corner of Znamenka and Gogolevsky bulv. there is a reconstructed mansion of Apraksiny (№21), one of the richest families in 19th century Moscow. Their house was famous for its theatre where some of Russian greatest actors appeared on stage for the first time. In 1812 French officer of the Napoleon army Henry Beil stayed in this house. This officer was to become the world famous writer Stendhal.

House No.10 is famous for secret meetings of the Decabrists (the first Russian revolutionaries). Today it is occupied by Russian Chess Association. Soviet chess players found the atmosphere of the house inspiring – no other country has won as many medals and titles in chess as Soviet Union.
