From Moscowiki
Book swapping is the practice of exchange of books between one person and another. It allows people to find out about new books and obtain a new book to read without having to pay. Book exchange is very popular outside Russia. Book swapping sites are popping up all over the Internet. Some major swapping events are organized by Universities and publishing houses.
The first Book Swap Club in Moscow offers anyone who has a passion for books a chance to meet personally and exchange books. This way you receive not only a new book but make new interesting acquaintances. Book swapping is the easiest way to get books free because literature in English [1] in Moscow is pretty expensive. And if you like to read a lot, swapping is a good way to stay in a budget. The bookstores don't usually pay much for the used books. And with the book swap you can get some value out of your old books. By sharing your unwanted books with others, you are also freeing up some space around the house for new ones. Book Swapping can appeal to people who are into recycling and care for the environment but also appeal to people with an eye for a freebie. So whatever your reasons are it is worth checking out Moscow Book Swap Club.
People who are interested in exchange need to join Expat.ru forum [2] and post lists of books they would be prepared to trade. Other members can then contact them with proposals for swaps from their own lists - or they can approach them to initiate the deal. There's no money involved and club meetings are usually held over a cup of coffee somewhere in the city centre once or twice a month. There is no limit to the number of books you can offer or seek. And you don’t need to have a huge library to join the club. You can start with just one book. Also some club members give their books away without asking anything in exchange (they just have too many of them and are happy to share).
The Book Swap Club is really multinational. There are people from UK, Malaysia, Bolivia, Bulgaria, France, USA, Australia, Italy and Russia. Mostly they are expats but Russian people are also very active participants. All participants have totally different backgrounds, which makes club meetings even more interesting. It doesn’t matter if you are a head consultant or a humanitarian or a financial controller or a medical student or a teacher or an artist. They all come together to exchange books, to talk about them and life in Moscow. For those who just recently arrived to live in Moscow, book club is a nice place to socialize. For Russians it’s a good opportunity to practice the English language. Expats who have been in Moscow long enough think that book swapping is a really good idea.
