Archangel Cathedral (part of Kremlin), or Arkhangelsky sobor was erected in 1505-1508 by Italian architect Aleviz Novy and served as a burial-vault for all Great Princes and Tsars until the early XVIII century. The capital was then moved to St.- Peterburg, and new burying place was established in the Petropavlovsky cathedral.

The cathedral was consecrated in honor of Archangel Mikhail, so that this first defender of man’s spirit in life would also defend them in death. The frescoes on the walls depict rulers buried here and their famous ancestors. All 47 tombstones placed in the cathedral are originally made of stone; in 1913 they were all enclosed into special copper cases. The stony coffins lie 2 meters (6.5 ft) beneath the floor.

Here are the graves of Princes Ivan Kalita (he was buried here first of all in the wooden precursor of the cathedral) and Dmitry Donskoy, tsars Ivan III and Ivan the Terrible, first tsars of Romanovy Dynasty and many others. Here’s laced a special wooden shrine of tsarevich Dmitry, younger son of Ivan the Terrible.
