Moscow Museum Guide

[edit] Description

The museum of Old Russian Culture and Art is of special interest among the others: it is nearly the only museum of the Russian Middle Age covering the vast historical period of more than 700 years. The exposition of the museum is presented mainly by the icons of 13th-17th centuries, showing Jesus Christ, Mother of God, apostles, Old Testament prophets. The museum is situated in Spaso-Andronnikovsky Monastery founded in the second half of the 14th century. At the beginning of the 15th century a prominent Russian icon-painter Andrey Rublev lived and worked here. After the October revolution lots of icons, embroidered shrouds, books and crosses collected in the Monastery churches for more than 6 centuries were plundered or destroyed. And only in the course of time, step-by-step museum-workers supported by specialists and antiquity lovers have managed to revive and renew the collection so it would be possible for us today to see it.

[edit] Collection

The collection of about 5000 icons represents all most important periods and trends of Russian icon-painting. But without some special knowledge or any help of a guide it’s difficult to find any special difference between the styles of various Russian provinces.
