House of Impressions. Classic and Contemporary Media Art
KorzhevThe Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts presents the first project of its newly established Department of Film and Media Arts. The exhibition «House of Impressions. Classic and Contemporary Media Art» in the Museum Quarter of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts represents a collection of 19 artworks of outstanding video and media artists of the 20th and 21st century. The project is dedicated to the collision of the past and the present, the innovative processes, which occurred in the 20th century and were related to the “liberation” of artistic tools and media. The Museum invites visitors not only to the space of the old Manor, but also into the space of installations created by taking into account the genio loci. Today’s art strives to go beyond not only the picture frame, but beyond the space of the screen. Amongst all the features of the works in “House of Impressions – Classic and Contemporary Media Art,” this is one of the most important ones. Moreover, in the 21st century a museum does not need to be absolutely quiet – our sight, hearing and movement through the museum display are the means of our perception; from the retina of the eye to a tactile sensation – such is the process of immersion in the image.

Ivan Aivazovsky. For the 200th Anniversary
The Tretyakov Gallery is preparing a large-scale monographic exhibition of Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900), one of the best-known and most popular painters in Russia. His art includes the themes that touched many generations of artists: the attempts to depict infinite, limitless spaces, the desire to capture the ever-changing nature in a given moment of time. From the large number of works created by Aivazovsky (based on his own estimate, approximately 6000), the exhibition presents about 100 paintings and 50 graphic works. The curators’ selection will allow the viewers to see the best examples of Aivazovsky paintings: seascapes, battle scenes, graphics works. The exhibition will display simultaneously four most significant paintings of the artist: “The Rainbow” (1873), “The Black Sea” (1881, both from Tretyakov Gallery), “The Ninth Wave” (1850), “The Wave” (1889, both from State Russian Museum). For the first time, the art lovers will see the large format painting “On the shores of the Caucasus” (1885, Tretyakov Gallery) that has never been on show before. The documentary section will introduce Aivazovsky as a patron of arts, the first honorary citizen of Theodosia. The exhibition will also include models of ships, compasses, globes, telescopes. Participants: the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the National Art Gallery named after Ivan Aivazovsky (Theodosia), regional Russian museums, private collections. Until 20.11.16

Leon Steinmetz. The Spell of Antiquity
The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to present the exhibition, “Leon Steinmetz. The Spell of Antiquity.” Leon Steinmetz, a contemporary American artist of Russian origin, is known for his free, unrestrained drawing style and his elegant, refined colors. His works, ranging from abstract to figurative, are at the same time witty and deeply thoughtful. Steinmetz’s first international recognition came when, as a very young artist, he was awarded first prize at the biennale in Latina, Italy for a series of paintings inspired by Ovid’s “Metamorphosis.” This success was followed by multiple exhibitions. Steinmetz's work is represented in the permanent collections of the world’s major museums: the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, the Dresden Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among them, as well as in private collections around the world. In addition, works by Leon Steinmetz are widely represented in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts collection.
