20:00 IAMX (UK)
MadonnaIAMX is the solo musical project of Chris Corner, which was founded by Corner in 2004 in London. It is an independent music project which also focuses on and experiments with visual art. Musically, IAMX spans multiple genres from electronic rock and dance music to burlesque influenced songs and emotional ballads. Corner's striking and wide ranging voice, and his way of programming sounds and beats is an obvious characteristic of the IAMX sound. Since 2006, IAMX has been based in Berlin, Germany where Corner has found "the spirit to care less about the music industry and take an independent route." Berlin is also mentioned in the lyrics which concern subjects such as sexual identity, death, love, narcotic intoxication, decadence, critique of religion and politics, alienation, addiction, modern society and gender bending. The topic of gender bending is further emphasised by Corner's own distinctive and androgynous image. Live, IAMX are known for their highly energetic and theatrical performances. Unusual stage outfits and body painting are also core elements of IAMX shows. The stage design consists of art and props constructed by Corner and his live band members. The visual art element of the project can be seen in the IAMX music videos and in the projections at their live shows. Both contain sometimes strong and controversial visual content, often directed, shot and edited by Corner himself. All of IAMX albums have been released independently and produced by Corner. In 2011 IAMX released Volatile Times. For his fifth outing, Unified Field, beats are still the cornerstone of his songs, but he branches out with lush, idiosyncratic Brit-pop instrumentation. His voice alternates between angelic cabaret crooning and alt-rock howling, and has a Jeff Buckley quality about it that can be polarizing, but the complex production and songwriting are very impressive throughout. Metanoia, Corner's sixth studio album as IAMX, is a milestone for the multifarious English composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and video artist. The consistently riveting set marks a timely return to musical activity for Corner, whose innovative, influential body of work has established him as one of the most potent creative forces in the world of electronic music. Having made his initial mark as co-founder and charter member of seminal British trip-hop progenitors Sneaker Pimps, Corner has forged a powerful and enduring creative identity as IAMX. Matching a fiercely original sonic vision with deeply catchy, personally charged songwriting and a charismatic, emotionally raw performing persona, Corner has built a powerful body of recordings that have won IAMX a loyal and diverse international fan base. Along the way, IAMX has evolved from enigmatic studio project into an eccentric, expansive live act, incorporating additional musicians and all manner of costumes, sets and visual effects. Metanoia offers some of IAMX's most personal and expressive music to date. The first new IAMX release in two and a half years, it's largely the product of a challenging, often harrowing period during which Corner battled, and ultimately prevailed over, a variety of personal demons that caused him to reexamine his personal and artistic priorities - and to briefly consider abandoning music altogether. "It was a combination of despair and depression and insomnia, and it was very difficult," Corner explains, "It took me a long time to get through it, but I learned a lot about myself, and I developed a new set of mental tools that allowed me to survive." "This is the first record I've made in a long time without being manically stressed," Corner notes. "I was very conscious of wanting to move into a more relaxed phase of my life, so I intentionally took a lot of the time pressure and work stress out of record-making, and made it as easy on myself as I could. That was very different, because each time I've made a record in the past, there's been a tour booked and a manager breathing down my neck, and the depression came from that stress. So this was like going back to the beginning, where you’re just doing it for pure enjoyment." That feeling of creative liberation is prominent throughout Metanoia, as demonstrated by such powerful, uplifting tracks as "Happiness", "Wildest Wind" and the introspective "Look Outside". More info
