"Chamber Evenings" series. Alexander Knyazev (cello) and Nikolay Lugansky (piano) will perform Sonata for cello and piano in D Minor, op. 40 by Shostakovich, Sonata for cello and piano in A Major, FWV 8 by Franck, and Sonata for cello and piano in G Minor, op. 19 by Rachmaninov. Alexander Knyazev is one of the most charismatic musicians of his generation performing as celloist and organist. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory as celloist (class of Prof. A. Fedorchenko) and the Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory as organist (class of Prof. G. Kozlova). His concerts are successively performed in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Australia, the USA, etc. In 2005 he received the Ecko Klassik prize for the record of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich music. In 2006 he also received Echo Klassik for his Tchaikovsky records, and in 2007 he was awarded the Echo prize for his CD with sonatas by Chopin and Rachmaninoff. One of the world's great interpreters of the piano repertoire Nikolai Lugansky regularly works with prominent conductors of major orchestras. His concerts, recitals, and chamber music performances throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas have earned him the rapturous applause of critics as well as audiences. His numerous recordings offer further evidence of his artistry. In 1990 Nikolai was awarded Second Prize at the Rachmaninov Competition in Moscow. In 1992, at the International Summer Academy "Mozarteum" in Salzburg, Austria, Nikolai was awarded a special prize "Best pianist." Nikolai won the 1994 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. Performer - Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. Conducted by Valery Gergiev. Soloists: Alexander Buzlov (cello), Pavel Milyukov (violin). The program includes P. Tchaikovsky's Symphony # 5, Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33, Concerto for violin and ochestra. Under the leadership of Maestro Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Theatre has forged important relationships with the worlds' greatest opera houses, among them the Metropolitan Opera House, London's Royal Opera House, the San Francisco Opera, the Theatre Chatelet in Paris La Scala in Milan just to name a few. Besides extensive touring of the opera and the ballet company, the Kirov Orchestra has performed throughout world and has become one of the outstanding orchestras. The success of the orchestra's continual travelling has lead to the reputation of, what a journalist called, "the world's first global orchestra." The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra has played a role in countless Russian premieres as well as the first Russian performances of European operas and ballets including works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev, operas by Mikhail Glinka, Alexander Dargomyzhsky, Alexander Serov, Anton Rubinstein, Modest Musorgsky, Alexander Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - the list is endless. In 2008, according to results of a survey of leading music critics from major publications in America, Asia and Europe, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra was one of the top twenty orchestras in the world, beating two other Russian orchestras also listed in the ratings.
