19:00 The Rite of Spring. Les Noces
Igor Stravinsky's one-act ballets The Rite of Spring (Vesna Svyashchennaya) and Les Noces staged by French choreographer and director Regis Obadia. Production - Moscow Ballet Theatre. The Rite of Spring was written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company, with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky and stage designs and costumes by Nikolai Roerich. When the ballet was first performed, at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees on 29 May 1913, the avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a near-riot in the audience. Nevertheless, Stravinsky's music achieved rapid success as a concert piece and became recognised as one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century. It is very widely performed in the concert hall and is frequently revived on the stage. Les noces by Igor Stravinsky is a dance cantata, or ballet with vocalists which was premiered on June 13, 1923 at the Theatre de la Gaite in Paris, by the Ballets Russes with choreography by Bronislava Nijinska. The orchestra was conducted by Ernest Ansermet. Stravinsky wrote the libretto himself using Russian wedding lyrics taken primarily from Songs Collected by P.V. Kireevsky (1911). The work is usually performed in Russian or French; English translations are sometimes used, and Stravinsky used one himself in both the 1934 and 1959 recordings he conducted for Columbia Records.
