20:00 Bird Radio (UK)
Bird RadioBird Radio is multi-instrumentalist Mikey Kirkpatrick who performs and records original songs using vocals, guitars, flutes, loops, effects and a suitcase bass drum. Described on different occasions as "a mix of old testament preacher and Captain Beefheart", "a flute-toting, bass drum-beating sensation", "future medieval, as if J.G. Ballard had written The Wicker Man", and "stirring beats and complex gothic flute arrangments in modern Anglo-Saxon folk music style, Brel-inspired chanson, or Kurt Weill-sounding theatrical music." Bird Radio draws from primordial folk, blues and ritualistic sound to create powerful songs that combine the ancient art of storytelling with rousing and hypnotic beats and rhythms. Bird Radio has performed at over 100 venues, nationally and internationally, including Union Chapel, Cecil Sharp House, Cafe Oto, Purcell Room, Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Britain, The Pataphysical Museum, Secret Garden Party, SOFAR living room concerts, Cabaret Futura, The Horse Hospital as well as venues across the USA, Canada, Greece, Germany, The Netherlands and Italy. He has composed music for experimental films and performance, been a featured artist on BBC radio, Resonance FM and WFMU in New York, received the "Knap O Howar" arts award in 2012, the Aldeburgh Music Open Space Residency 2013/14 and released his first studio album The Boy and the Audience produced by Rick Campion and mastered by the legendary Jon Astley and shortly followed by the "Time to Go" film trilogy on 7th October 2013 with SFE/Cherry Red Records. Inspired to take up the flute by the music of Jethro Tull and their leader Ian Andersson, there's nobody else quite like Bird Radio on the UK music scene. Originally from Hereford, performer Mikey Kirkpatrick began his solo act Bird Radio after graduating in music from Goldsmiths College in London and is an experienced musician, composer, arranger and producer. This year he took part in a BBC Radio 4 documentary on one man bands after being seen at the Montreal One Man Band Festival by Radio 6's Tom Ravenscroft. The Boy and the Audience has came with a beautifully designed and illustrated booklet by celebrated Italian artist and experimental film-maker Chiara Ambrosio. More info
