10:45 Desert Dancer
Drama. Russia, UK 2014, 100 min. Directed by Richard Raymond. Starring: Freida Pinto, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Cullen, Reece Ritchie, Marama Corlett, Akin Gazi, Simon Kassianides, Makram Khoury. The idols of his underground dance group were Gene Kelly, Rudolf Nureyev, and Michael Jackson — whose video clips were also illegal. As a result, Afshin’s own life ends up in danger. Akram Khan, the famous choreographer, served as director of the dance numbers in Richard Raymond’s debut film. He said, “This film is not only about dance, but about the reasons why dance is important to our life. I am inspired not just by this story of a battle for freedom from political oppression through dance, but by the thought that we all have the right for freedom, regardless of what country, nationality, or culture we belong to. Dance has no physical borders.”
